Why the Best Ski Days Aren’t Just About the Snow

Discover why community, connection, and fresh tracks make Thredbo’s Rossignol Ladies Day the ultimate mountain escape for female skiiers of all levels.

The older I get, the more I realise my favourite ski days have very little to do with the skiing itself.

Of course, I love finding untouched corduroy first thing in the morning and chasing that perfect run. But when I think back on decades of ski trips, it’s rarely the number of runs I remember. It’s the chairlift conversations, the coffee stops, helping a friend through a run she’s been nervous about all morning, and laughing until your stomach hurts after someone takes an unexpected tumble in the snow.

Inside Thredbo’s Rossignol Ladies Day: The Ultimate Mountain Experience

I grew up skiing with my girlfriends, and those trips created friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Even now, one of the things I love most about skiing is meeting other women who share that same passion for the mountains. You’re never too old to make new ski friends.

That’s why I love the idea behind Thredbo’s Rossignol Ladies Day.

Rather than focusing purely on the skiing, it’s about bringing women together for a memorable day on the mountain. Whether you arrive with a group of friends or come on your own, it feels like the kind of experience where everyone leaves with a few more stories, and probably a few more friends, than when they arrived.

The day begins before sunrise with a snowcat ride to Eagles Nest, Australia’s highest restaurant. There aren’t many experiences quite like watching the mountain wake up before everyone else. As the first light spills across the Snowy Mountains, guests enjoy breakfast before heading out for a private First Tracks Club session.

If you’ve never skied freshly groomed runs before the lifts open to the public, you’re in for a treat. There’s something incredibly special about making those first turns on perfectly groomed snow while the mountain is still quiet.

Even after all these years, I still come home from every ski trip having learnt something. That’s one of the things I love about skiing, you never really stop improving. Whether it’s a small adjustment to your technique or finally finding the confidence to tackle a run that’s been sitting just outside your comfort zone, there’s always something new to discover.

Throughout the day, participants ski with Thredbo’s experienced instructors in small groups, making it feel far more like skiing with friends than being part of a formal lesson. Priority lift access means less time waiting and more time enjoying the mountain.

I’ll admit, I’m also a bit of a ski gear enthusiast, so the chance to spend the day testing Rossignol’s latest ski range really appeals to me. Buying skis is a big investment, and there’s no better way to find the right pair than skiing a variety of models on the same day, in the same conditions.

Then comes one of my favourite parts of any day at Thredbo, lunch at Kareela Hutte.

I’ve always thought Kareela feels more like something you’d stumble across in the European Alps than the Australian ski fields. Sitting down to a long lunch, surrounded by spectacular mountain views, is one of those moments that reminds you just how special skiing in Australia can be. It’s little wonder it’s one of the most sought-after dining experiences on the mountain.

For me, days like this remind me why I fell in love with skiing in the first place. It has always been about so much more than the snow. It’s about the people you meet, the memories you create and the stories you take home. If I finish the day with tired legs, a full camera roll and a couple of new ski friends, I’d call that a pretty good day.

If that sounds like your kind of adventure, there are still limited places available for Friday’s Rossignol Ladies Day at Thredbo.
